The Fort Myers Weather and Fishing is Fantastic!

Capt. Rob Modys
February 27, 2011
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing in the southwest Florida area has been fantastic. Nights in the 60's with days in the 80's certainly doesn't hurt. The back bay water temperatures are in the mid 70's and that has really stepped the bite up a notch.

Redfish are cruising just about everywhere with the best bite on the higher tides around mangrove islands and shorelines. We've still been throwing large live shrimp on jig heads at them with a lot of success. Cut ladyfish is also working along with artificial plugs and soft swim baits.

Sea trout are plentiful and most are in the slot in Estero Bay. Been using live bait and live shrimp under popping corks and that's been getting the bigger ones that are laid up in about 2 feet of water on the grass flats. We're also tossing a variety of flies at them with Clousers and Deceivers working best.

The near shore bite is pretty crazy right now. The spanish mackerel moved in in big numbers late in the week and we were getting 20 to 30 fish on each outing. Throw anything shiny at them and them make a fairly quick retrieve and you'll be hooked up in no time.

Pompano have also arrived. We've been getting into them just outside the passes on the hard sand bottom in about 4 to 6 feet of water. Small yellow jigs tipped with shrimp has been working best and it will also be difficult to avoid all the small sharks in the same area. Lots of bonnets and blacktips!

It doesn't get much better than this so get out there, enjoy the weather and go fishing!
